I am volunteer search and rescue responder. I don't like carrying a backpack as I find that they are top/back heavy(depending how you load it), and in steep terrain if your not careful you could possibly fall over backwards. For search and rescue missions I wear a tactical vest, I find that I can distribute the weight evenly on my person and have all of the essentials in the up front pouches within easy reach (first aid, admin with compass and notepad, water bottles and radio/gps. What I've noticed though is that there aren't any really large pouches that could carry all of my camping gear if I wanted to adapt it for that use.

What I am proposing is your standard molle tactical vest in the front with the ability to customize the pouches as needed, but basically a camping backpack in the back. Could be tactical looking with molle for additional tie downs, but should have a large compartment for items such as clothes, stove, cooking gear, ability to lash hammock or tent, sleeping bag etc. I think it could have a built in rain fly for inclimate weather and should be made out of a tough, yet light weight fabric. If we don't got with a rainfly, then the fabric should be waterproof to prevent the contents from getting wet.

Could you provide links or pics of similar products to the one you described?

This is about the closest item that I am aware of that is commercially made. However it is not molle and the pockets in the front are permanently sewn to the vest allowing no customization. The pack on the back droops heavily when loaded down as the vest material is not able to carry the weight and it lacks structure. I will attempt to draw up something later today to illustrate what I am thinking of if this does not help.

Gr8Dave37 thank you so much for bringing this forward! I'm also a SAR volunteer and I hate my pack. There are things we're required to bring on missions, not just for ourselves but for the subject and our dogs, most of it never gets touched, but it has to be there. I keep everything I need to access in my chest pack, so having a vest that could distribute all of it securely in a balanced way would be brilliant. I was looking at Fjallraven's Smock No. 1, but I would want something that could be used in warm weather as well.

gr8dave can you explain the contents of the pack? Hydration bladder in top pack? Do you carry medical supplies that needs to be on a tear away system? What heavy equipment are you carrying so the weight can be distributed properly? Do you wear this vest with other gear or belt system? or will the vest and pack carry everything?

I currently wear a Condor tactical vest. In the front I have 2 water bottle holders, one on the right and one on the left. Right side is an admin pouch for compass, write in the rain pad, pencils, pens, waterproof map holder. Left side contains a tear away EMS pouch as you said. Right shoulder has a radio pouch left shoulder GPS pouch. On the back I do have a 3L water bladder ( I have dogs so I carry a lot of extra water), with two other pouches. top pouch contains a waterproof box with extra batteries, space blanket, garbage bags and waterproof matches. Bottom pouch contains a sawyer mini and a canteen cup. I also carry a multitool and double flagging tape carrier on my belt.

I have now gotten a hammock system that I'd like to carry as well but don't really have room for it or anything else.

Is there any bunge cord or webbings on the top/bottom of your backpack to secure your hammck system?

Not currently, not there is not, however the back of the vest as well as the pouches on the back are all Molle, so could attach other pouches just for the hammock items

So you replaced backpack with tactical vest to carry things in camping. I am curious is there any inconvenience for the tactical vest when you are camping.

Negative. I do not use the tactical vest for camping. I currently use the tactical vest for my search and rescue, however there is a distinct lack of larger backpack type compartments for molle attachments to a tactical vest. Which is why I was looking for somethign larger and possibly 2 compartment. I like the T-rex, but I think it could be better as a standalone molle compartment.

I could see making this with 1tg features.

I like how this one looks. I could see using normal PALS webbing instead of the crossdraw on front. On the back design the backpack with the compartments that he stated above. I would add more PALS webbing onto the backpack portion on the sides so that you could add whatever you like that needs to be carried. I also like how the one below has the PALS webbing on the belt area. I would modify the main back to have a full size hydration pouch and add on front of vest some velcro loops to hold the hydration tube. On the bottom of the backpack section put in some retaining straps for whatever gear you want to carry down there.

Also I thought that have the hydration pouch layer be perma affixed to the vest but for the next layer of the backpack pouches have it rip away with support buckle straps on the side to hold it on. Makes it modular. If you are with someone else they can take it off for you while you are still wearing your vest.

Bunch more in google search as well but this one stood out.

Finally had the opportunity to take some photos of my search vest. The front is pretty much laid out how I want it and it's pretty balanced. The back is what needs help. The pouches that are on there waste too much space as you can see in the photos, there is plenty more room to attach on there, but really no molle pouches that are that big.

Actually, that is pretty darn close to what I am thinking of. I looked it up, not sure I care for all of the internal pockets or not, but definitely yes on something that size for the back.

This one looks like it's integrated with it and unremovable.
