Maybe the K9 community can help me out?

So I have a 10 year old mini schnauzer, he goes everywhere with me, been on many road trips and many outdoor adventures. He has had many winter coats for our winter excursions and there was never any issue's. So I decided I would purchase the power train dog harness for the summer months ahead. For some reason he does not like it and I'm puzzled as to why, it fits good, nothing binding or pinching. I've never seen him act like this, I put it on him and he hides behind our couch.
Has anybody else ever experienced this? If so what tricks did you use to get them comfortable and did it work? Should I just consider maybe buying the fire watcher harness and trying it instead? Any thoughts would help....

He is used to other gear? Hmmm, maybe make it very loose-fitting and put it on over a winter coat?
Why not take it off and let it just lay around somewhere for him to get used to the smell?
Yea he can and does and will wear thermal winter coats and even shirts no issue's. And it's funny you mentioned the smell was wondering if maybe something in the manufacturing process he doesn't like. The only real difference between this and other gear he has used are the plastic buckles and material. Great suggestions, thanks @Sandspoor
